A Sleepless Start and Brutal Climbs

The morning of June 6th began to the relentless soundtrack of nearly 100 chickens crying out from the dead of night straight through to dawn. I barely slept a wink, but I eventually dragged myself out of bed. The incredibly kind host who let me crash at their place prepared a simple breakfast of crackers and coffee before I hit the road.

The day kicked off with a slight downhill, but it was an absolute trap. What followed was a hellish, incredibly steep incline crossing from Cebu City into the Balamban district. After somehow surviving that first massive climb, I grabbed some food at a local burger joint. The sky looked ominous and cloudy, so I took a quick breather at a coffee shop called DCC before tackling the endless upward grind once again.

The Downpour and Disaster

After pushing through the endless ascent, I finally reached the summit area. There, I crossed paths with some local agricultural leaders, sharing a meal and some great conversation.
But just as I started a dangerously steep descent, the skies completely opened up. A massive rainstorm hit, bringing a wave of absolute disaster. My Wi-Fi router went down, and my power bank completely died on me. Stranded, I huddled in a shelter with some locals, making small talk while we waited for the relentless rain to pass.

An Unexpected Sanctuary
Once the storm cleared, I pressed on until I reached an area called Balamban District 3. Inside a local chapel, I found some kids doing their cleaning chores. I struck up a conversation and asked if they knew anywhere I could sleep for the night. To my total surprise, they invited me to stay at their home.
The hospitality of this family was nothing short of extraordinary. Not only did they serve me a warm meal, but they also did my laundry—in two separate loads, no less!
Why We Travel
There were many moments today when the language barrier felt immense, and my words just couldn't get through. Yet, despite not speaking the same language fluently, we managed to connect on a much deeper level. It makes you wonder: what is the real purpose of a journey like this? I realized today that it's all about these raw, unscripted moments of human connection. From the disastrous rain to the warmth of a stranger's home, this was a day I will never, ever forget.
