Into the Arena: My First Cockfight

July 12th. Today was the day for a major event I'd been anticipating: stepping into a local cockfighting arena.
There's a narrow alley right near the guesthouse where some of the locals raise fighting roosters. Walking past them every day, they eventually started asking, "Hey, are you Japanese?" Before I knew it, we became good friends. They'd casually offer me food or buy me drinks almost daily.
When Sunday rolled around, they asked, "We're heading to the cockfight today, wanna come?" I instantly said yes. Honestly, I was still feeling a bit under the weather, but there was no way I was missing a raw experience like this.
The Colosseum of Roosters and Pesos

Arriving at the arena, the atmosphere was instantly shocking. It was an entirely different world.
The rules are pretty straightforward: the match ends when one rooster stops moving. Meanwhile, an electronic board above the ring constantly updates the total bets.
The craziest part is the money involved. About 60,000 to 80,000 pesos (about $1,030 to $1,380 USD) flies around in a single match. And these matches happen every five minutes!
Blood and feathers flying everywhere. The crowd going absolutely wild, screaming at the top of their lungs.
Honestly, the sheer volume and excitement of the humans placing bets were way more intense than the fighting birds themselves. It felt exactly like standing in a modern-day Roman Colosseum.
Animals raised specifically to fight and survive. While it might look brutal from the outside, it's a stark, unfiltered reality of life here. I just stood there, totally overwhelmed by the raw energy of it all. Weirdly enough, soaking in all that crazy vibe somehow cured my cold completely.
A Night Out at a Local Cabaret

Later that evening, since it was my final night before leaving, the guesthouse crew invited me to a local cabaret club (KTV).
Confession time: I am absolutely terrible at these places.
You sit down, the local hostesses sit next to you, and everyone sings karaoke. But my brain always goes into overdrive. "What should I talk about? Is everyone actually having fun?" I just overthink everything.
Looking around, my friends were giving 100% of their energy, purely enjoying the moment. That's the trick, right? You just have to let go and feel the vibe, rather than analyze it. I know that in theory, but actually turning my brain off is a different story. I felt a bit awkward and frustrated with myself, but it was still an eye-opening experience.
A Night of Gratitude
Even with my awkwardness, being able to explore these deep, authentic parts of the local culture with such an amazing group of people is an experience I will treasure forever.
From the raw, life-and-death stakes of the cockfight to the neon-lit energy of the KTVโI feel like I really saw the unfiltered, intensely human side of the Philippines.
Nothing but gratitude for this incredible chapter. Thank you for the best night.
