Farewell in Mildurah

On February 28, I said goodbye to Mildurah, where I had spent two peaceful days. The house I stayed in was filled with unique paintings and carefully chosen items, making it a warm and inspiring place.
When it was time to leave, my host came outside to see me off properly. That simple act meant so much—it’s always touching when someone shows they truly care about your journey.
Riding Along the Coastline

From the start, the day’s ride followed the ocean. The path was lined with coastal conservation areas, where trees and landscapes are protected. It was another reminder of how deeply nature conservation is rooted in Australia’s culture.
The scenery was breathtaking, the fresh air from the ocean filling my lungs with every breath. Of course, riding along the coast also meant battling crosswinds. They were strong, but not overwhelming—just enough to make me feel the challenge.
The long, straight roads framed by the ocean on one side felt endless. Still, they carried a certain charm. Australia constantly reveals places where people can live with a sense of calm and abundance. Perhaps that’s why so many say they want to live here someday.
Along the way, I spotted a sign warning drivers to watch for ducks crossing the road. A small detail, but it made me smile—such signs are rare in Japan.
The Midway Point by the Sea

At the halfway mark, I reached a seaside town. The wind here wasn’t gentle anymore—it was fierce, carrying a raw energy from the ocean.
What impressed me most was how the town itself connected directly to the sea. Waterways extended inland, lined with private boats, showing another side of the local lifestyle—one that blended convenience with luxury.
Even here, cycling lanes ran along the streets, keeping the ride smooth and safe. But the further I went, the stronger the winds became.
A Giant Wooden Sculpture and an Accident

Not long after, I encountered my second giant wooden sculpture—a huge figure facing the sea. To see its full face, I would have had to go out into the water, which made it feel like a hidden challenge left for travelers.
But then, trouble struck. A sudden gust of wind toppled my bike, and with the heavy 60kg load, the fall snapped one of my charging cables. It was a frustrating reminder that I needed to reduce weight before continuing further.
The Final Stretch to Preston Beach

After passing through another section of dirt roads—some smooth, others rough enough to shake me—I finally reached Preston Beach.
It was exactly as I had been told: a free campsite by the ocean. The sandy ground made it surprisingly comfortable to lie down, soft enough to rest my back after the long ride.
The wind was still strong, so I laid my bike flat on the ground and secured my gear before settling in. As the sun set, the beauty of the beach revealed itself. It felt like nature’s way of rewarding me for the day’s effort.
And when night came, the sky opened wide. The stars over Australia were vast and endless, a breathtaking display of nature’s grandeur.
