A Windy Morning

January 31st, at the campsite. The rain didn’t fall, but the wind was so strong during the night that the top of my tent flew away. Luckily, it landed nearby and I was able to retrieve it.
After packing up, I set out toward Malang. Being the second largest city in East Java after Surabaya, I immediately noticed how the traffic grew heavier as I approached.
An Unexpected Mosque

On the way, I came across a Chinese-style mosque. It was unusual and caught my attention, so I stopped to take a look. The writing on the building was in traditional Chinese characters.
Not long after, I stopped for breakfast. As usual, Bakso was my choice. Eating this hot soup by the roadside had already become part of my routine.
Small Breaks, Small Joys

Later, I rested again and tried a cappuccino jelly drink for 6,000 rupiah, less than one US dollar. It gave me a quick boost of energy. Right next to it was the same type of drink, but strawberry flavor, so I ordered that as well.
These little breaks, simple as they were, made the ride more enjoyable.
Arrival in Malang

Finally, I arrived in Malang and stopped at a café inside the university, UB Café. There I met a local woman who was also a bicycle traveler. She had even started her own outdoor community. Listening to her speak, I could feel the joy and freedom in her life. Someday, I hope we can travel together.
Before heading to my WarmShowers host for the night, I stopped for food. I ordered Soto Ayam, and it was one of the best I’ve ever had. The seasoning gave it a taste so addictive I couldn’t stop until the bowl was empty.
Meeting Adi, My Host

When I reached my host’s home, I felt both relief and exhaustion. My bicycle had carried me well, but it too seemed tired from the long ride.
Adi, my WarmShowers host, was also a cyclist. His dream is to one day tour Europe by bike. For now, he works hard to save money for that goal. One of his jobs is selling pancakes—5,000 rupiah each, simple and tasty.
Because of the heat and my fatigue, I collapsed into a short nap soon after arriving.
Evening Walk and Final Finds
Later, I explored a nearby café. Indonesia has a surprising number of collaborations with Japanese anime. The staff told me that Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan are especially popular here.
Before returning, I stopped by a convenience store and bought something like super glue for about 100 yen. I’m not sure if it’s reliable, but I’ll try it to repair the broken mount of my GoPro.
The day had been long, filled with strong winds, city traffic, and new faces. But in the end, it was the kindness of people and the small moments of discovery that made the journey to Malang unforgettable.
