A Day of Reflection in Newcastle
My second day in Newcastle turned out to be one of the most important days of my journey so far. It was a day when I had to face a difficult choice about my future and the direction of this adventure.
For a long time, I had been thinking about extending my Working Holiday Visa to stay in Australia for another year. At first, it seemed like the natural thing to do. If I worked on a farm or in construction, I could qualify for the visa extension and continue riding across the country. But as I sat down and thought carefully, I realized that this decision was not as simple as I once believed.
Rethinking Priorities
The truth is, the main purpose of my journey is not just to circle the continent—it is to write a book, to tell the stories I gather along the way, and to share them with others. Cycling is my method, but not the final goal.
If I chose to extend my visa, I would likely spend months working only to secure the paperwork. It would give me more time in Australia, yes, but that time might be filled with labor that pulled me away from my writing and the deeper purpose of this journey.
I imagined myself spending weeks on a farm far from Newcastle, exhausted and disconnected from the flow of my travels. Was that really how I wanted to use these precious months? The answer, in the end, was no.
The Decision
So I made the choice: I will not renew my visa.
It was not an easy decision. Part of me still wants to complete a full loop around Australia in one stretch. But I reminded myself that the world is wide, and journeys do not always need to follow a perfect line. I can return to Australia in the future, with a new visa, and continue where I left off.
For now, my path will take me forward in a different way—first to New Zealand, where I plan to ride and work under a new visa, and then eventually back to Australia for another chapter.
Looking Ahead
Making this decision lifted a weight from my shoulders. Instead of chasing the clock to fit everything in, I can focus on what matters most: living deeply in the present, writing, and connecting with the people I meet.
This journey is not about speed or perfection. It is about meaning. And today in Newcastle, I chose the path that allows me to honor that meaning.
