A Heartwarming Homecoming
After a stint in Fukuoka, I finally made my way back to my hometown where I was born and raised: Ibaraki Prefecture. This time around, I had the wonderful opportunity to stay at a high school friend's house.

He actually married one of our classmates, and they now have a beautiful, energetic family. Joining them at their dining table and sharing a delicious, home-cooked meal filled me with an overwhelming sense of joy and gratitude.
Marveling at the World's Largest Bronze Statue
Later in the day, the whole family and I headed out for a little adventure. Our destination was the Ushiku Daibutsu—the largest bronze standing statue in the world.

To put its massive scale into perspective, it's about three times the size of the Statue of Liberty when you include the base! Standing right beneath it and looking up, the sheer size of the monument was absolutely breathtaking.
Ushiku Daibutsu
Located in Ibaraki Prefecture, the Ushiku Daibutsu is a breathtaking 120-meter-tall bronze statue of Amida Buddha that ranks among the largest in the world. Visitors can travel inside the statue to an observation floor for panoramic views, explore a hall containing thousands of golden Buddhas, and wander through vibrant seasonal flower gardens that surround this monumental symbol of peace. It stands as an awe-inspiring fusion of modern engineering and traditional faith, offering a unique perspective on Japan's spiritual landscape.
Investing in the Journey
I also took this perfect opportunity to invest in a new pair of shoes.

When your travels revolve around constantly walking, a good, reliable pair of sneakers is completely non-negotiable.

I went to a shop near Fujishiro Station, right by my old high school, had my feet properly measured for the very first time, and picked out the perfect pair to support my upcoming journeys.
The Highlight of the Trip
Looking back, out of everything I've experienced since returning to Japan, reconnecting with my high school friends has hands down been the absolute highlight.

Unlike elementary or junior high school, entering high school meant starting from scratch in an environment where I barely knew a single soul. Putting myself out there to make friends and build a community back then gave me lifelong bonds that I truly cherish today. Reconnecting with them and seeing how far we've come made this entire trip back to Japan completely worth it.
