The Cambodian Arc de Triomphe

There it stood, proudly at the center of an open plaza: a structure reminiscent of Paris’s Arc de Triomphe. For Cambodians, this place is known as a favorite dating spot, where young couples gather as the evening light softens.
A Hint of Odaiba in Phnom Penh

The entire area had the feeling of reclaimed land, much like Tokyo’s Odaiba. On one side stretched wide boulevards, and on the other, a cluster of European-style buildings, almost as if a piece of the Western world had been transplanted here.

Walking further, I found familiar silhouettes: an Eiffel Tower standing tall against the skyline, and a structure inspired by the Sydney Opera House. It felt surreal, a pocket of the world gathered together in Cambodia’s capital.
A Personal Update of Cambodia
When I first thought of Cambodia, this was not the image that came to mind. I had imagined temples, rural roads, and quiet riversides—not a place echoing with Western modernity. Being here forced me to update my picture of Cambodia, and this new layer of understanding became a precious memory of my journey.
